Start here

From zero to ready on the XRP Ledger.

You do not need a finance degree. You need a wallet, a little XRP, and a clear path. This guide walks you from “I have never owned crypto” to using the XRPL with confidence — 13 short stages, around two and a half hours in total, at your own pace.

Nothing here is financial advice. Prices move. Tokens can fail. Check every claim yourself.

Your progress — 0 of 13 stages0% complete
  1. 01What this path is

    About 3 minutes

Goal: Know exactly what you'll be able to do by the end — and what this path deliberately isn't.

CampXRP is a learning and risk-analysis site for the XRP Ledger. We explain the basics in plain language, then give you tools that score tokens and liquidity pools so you can inspect them yourself. Work the stages in order; each one assumes the one before it.

By the end you will know how to

    • Create a self-custody wallet
    • Buy XRP and activate your account
    • Understand trustlines and transaction signing
    • Buy a token without handing your keys to someone else
    • Spot the biggest beginner mistakes
    • Use CampXRP's Safety, Health and Activity tools

    Do this

    • Mark stages complete as you go — your progress is saved on this device.
    • Keep paper and a pen nearby for your wallet backup.

    Be aware

    • Nothing here is financial advice. Prices move. Tokens can fail.
    • No price predictions, no guaranteed returns, no 'this one's going to moon'.
    • Our scores make risk visible. They don't remove it.

Next step: learn what crypto actually is, in one page.

  2. 02Crypto in one page

    About 8 minutes

Goal: Learn the five words that everything else on this path is built from.

Crypto is money that moves on a public network. No bank has to approve the transfer, anyone can see it happened, and nobody can quietly edit it afterwards. Price is simply what buyers and sellers agree on right now — nothing guarantees it goes up.

The five words you'll keep seeing

    Wallet
The app that holds your keys and lets you approve transactions.
    Address
Your public account number on the ledger. Starts with r… Safe to share.
    Backup / secret
The only way to recover the wallet if the phone is lost. Never shared.
    Token
An asset issued by someone on top of the ledger.
    XRP
The native asset of the XRP Ledger. Needs no issuer.

    Be aware

    • Anyone who promises guaranteed profit is selling you a story.
    Next step →

Next step: why people use the XRP Ledger.

  3. 03Why the XRP Ledger

    About 8 minutes

Goal: Understand the three properties that make the XRPL good for beginners.

The XRP Ledger was built for payments. Transactions usually finish in a few seconds, fees are tiny, and — unusually — there is an exchange built into the ledger itself. That built-in exchange is why you can swap assets and use liquidity pools without a separate 'crypto bank' holding your funds.

    What that means in practice

    Seconds, not hours
Payments settle in roughly 3–5 seconds.
    Fractions of a cent
Fees are so small they rarely factor into a decision.
    Exchange inside the ledger
You trade from your own wallet — no deposits to a company.
    Tokens have issuers
Every non-XRP token was created by somebody. Who, matters.
    Next step →

Next step: get your tools ready.

  4. 04What you need before you start

    About 4 minutes

Goal: Have everything ready so nothing stops you halfway through.

The list is short. A phone or computer, a way to buy XRP, somewhere safe and offline for your backup, and enough patience to check addresses twice. You do not need to understand cryptography.

    Before you start

    • I can install an app on my phone or computer.
    • I have a way to buy XRP — a card in the wallet app, or an exchange account.
    • I can keep a backup private, offline, on paper.
    • I will not rush the first transfer.
    Next step →

    Next step: create the wallet.

  5. 05Create a self-custody wallet

    About 15 minutes

Goal: Own an XRPL wallet only you control, with the backup stored safely offline.

Self-custody means you hold the keys. No company can reset your password. For a first wallet we recommend Xaman — it's the most established XRPL wallet and handles trustlines and signing clearly. Joey and Crossmark are useful later, and a hardware wallet is worth it once the amount matters.

    How a wallet backup works

    Create wallet

The app generates a secret only your device knows.

    Write it down

On paper. Two copies, two locations.

    Confirm it

The app re-checks that you copied it correctly.

    Store offline

No photos, no cloud, no notes app.

Lose the paper and the wallet is gone. There is no reset link on a public ledger.

    Do this

    • Download Xaman from the official app store only — never from a link in a DM.
    • Create a new account inside the app.
    • Write down the secret numbers / backup exactly as shown.
    • Store that backup offline, in a place you'd trust with cash.
    • Turn on the device lock (PIN / biometrics) inside the app.

    Be aware

    • If you lose the backup, nobody can recover the wallet. Not us, not Xaman, nobody.
    • Fake wallet apps exist. Check the publisher before installing.
    • Nobody from CampXRP, Xaman or First Ledger will ever ask for your secret.
    • Never type your backup into a website, chat or 'support' message.
    Next step →

Next step: buy XRP and turn the account on.

  6. 06Buy XRP and activate the account

    About 20 minutes

Goal: Fund the account so it exists on the ledger, with spare XRP left over.

A new XRPL account stays inactive until it receives enough XRP. Some of that XRP is a reserve — it stays locked so the account can exist. The reserve amount can change, so check the current number before you send. Send more than the reserve: you'll need spare XRP for fees, trustlines and your first trade. A common beginner range is several extra XRP, not the bare minimum.

    Reserve vs spendable XRP

    Account reserve

Locked so the account can exist. Returned if you ever close it.

    Trustline reserve

A little more locked for each token you choose to hold.

    Spendable XRP

What you can actually trade, send and pay fees with.

Never fund down to the bare reserve — you'll end up unable to move anything.

    Two ways in

Path A — buy inside Xaman
Xaman routes you to partners such as MoonPay and other Buy/Sell XRP xApps. Simplest path; availability depends on your country and fees may be higher than a large exchange. The XRP arrives directly in your wallet.
Path B — exchange, then withdraw
Create an account on a reputable exchange, buy XRP, then withdraw to your Xaman address. Cheaper, a few more steps. Send a small test amount first, then the rest.

    Do this

    • Path A: open Xaman → Buy/Sell XRP → follow the partner's steps.
    • Path B: buy XRP, then withdraw and paste your XRPL address from Xaman.
    • Path B: choose the XRP Ledger network on the withdrawal screen — never another network.
    • Send a small test amount first, confirm it arrives, then send the rest.
    • Check the current reserve in your wallet or on an explorer before deciding the amount.

    Be aware

    • XRP sent on the wrong network can be lost permanently.
    • A mistyped address can be unrecoverable. Check the first and last four characters.
    • Destination tags: exchanges often require one when you send XRP to them. Your personal Xaman wallet usually does not need one. Never invent a tag.
    • Do not drain the wallet down to the reserve or you may get stuck.
    Next step →

Next step: learn what you are actually signing.

  7. 07How signing works

    About 8 minutes

Goal: Read a signing screen properly and never approve something blind.

When your wallet pops up a request, you are being asked to approve a ledger action. Signing means 'yes, I approve this exact thing'. Once validated it's final — no undo, no chargeback, no support line.

    Read before you approve

    • What type of transaction is this? (Payment, TrustSet, OfferCreate…)
    • Which address is it going to — check first and last four characters.
    • What amount is moving, and which asset?
    • Is a trustline being created?
    • Is any unexpected extra action bundled in?
    • If you don't understand the screen, reject it. You can always redo it later.

    Be aware

    • Clipboard-swapping malware exists — always eyeball an address after pasting.
    • A failed transaction still burns the tiny fee. That's normal, not a hack.
    • Never sign a request that arrived unsolicited from a link, DM or QR code.
    Next step →

    Next step: trustlines.

  8. 08Trustlines

    About 12 minutes

Goal: Add a trustline to the right issuer, not a convincing copy.

XRP can sit in your wallet by itself. Other tokens cannot. A trustline is your permission to hold a specific token from a specific issuer. Two tokens can share the same ticker — only the issuer address tells you which one it is.

A token is ticker + issuer

    Ticker

e.g. 'CAMP'. Anyone can copy it. Proves nothing.

    + Issuer address

The r… account that created it. Cannot be faked.

    = The real token

Match both, every time, before you add a trustline.

    Do this

    • Check the issuer on the project's official site or verified account.
    • Confirm the same issuer on CampXRP's Tokens page.
    • Look at Safety, plus freeze, clawback and blackhole status.
    • Add the trustline from inside your wallet — a little extra XRP gets reserved.
    • Remove trustlines you no longer use to release that reserve (balance must be zero).

    Be aware

    • A copied ticker is not proof of anything.
    • Unsolicited tokens can appear in your wallet. Ignore them and never follow links in their names.
    • A trustline doesn't hand the issuer your XRP — but it does let you hold their token, so check who they are.
    Next step →

Next step: make a first purchase carefully.

  9. 09Buy a token without giving away your keys

    About 15 minutes

Goal: Swap XRP for a token on-ledger, at a price you understand.

You can swap on XRPL DEXs such as XPMarket, Magnetic and First Ledger. Those sites should not take custody of your funds — your wallet signs the trade and the assets never leave your account until it settles.

    Do this

    • Read the CampXRP Safety, Activity and Liquidity scores first.
    • Check liquidity, and expect slippage in thin markets.
    • Open a DEX from Resources and connect your wallet.
    • Start small so you can see how the fill behaves.
    • Confirm the trade in your wallet and on an explorer.

    Be aware

    • High 24-hour gains are not a safety rating.
    • A great price with almost no liquidity is a token you can't sell later.
    • Check the issuer before the chart. Always that order.
    • Resting (unfilled) offers lock a small reserve — cancel the stale ones.
    Next step →

Next step: understand pools before you deposit anything.

  10. 10Liquidity pools and yield

    About 20 minutes

Goal: Judge whether a pool is worth entering — and know how to get out.

A liquidity pool holds two assets so other people can trade. If you deposit, you earn a share of trading fees. You can also lose value through impermanent loss, thin liquidity or issuer-level risk. A high APY usually means high risk, not free money.

    Do this

    • Run the pool through our Pool Analyzer and read the Health breakdown.
    • Compare fee APY against the loss you'd take on a realistic price move.
    • Only pair assets you'd be happy holding either side of.
    • Start small and watch it for a week.
    • To exit, withdraw LP tokens back to both assets — mind the slippage on the way out.

    Before depositing, look at

    • Pool Health, and the reasoning behind the number.
    • Token Safety on both sides of the pair.
    • TVL — and whether one LP owns most of the pool.
    • Whether the issuer is blackholed (can never mint or change settings again).
    • Whether freeze or clawback still exist.
    • Whether volume looks real, or is one big one-off trade.

    Be aware

    • A pool can look profitable and still be fragile.
    • A very new pool with a very high APY is high-APY because it's very new.
    • Freeze and clawback aren't automatically bad — regulated stablecoin issuers are required to have them. You just need to know.
    Next step →

Next step: the mistakes that cost people money.

  11. 11Mistakes to avoid

    About 8 minutes

Goal: Recognise the eight failure modes before they happen to you.

Almost every loss we see is one of a small handful of mistakes, repeated. None of them are sophisticated. Read this list twice.

    Be aware

    • Sharing your backup with anyone.
    • Signing a transaction you did not read.
    • Buying a fake token with a copied name.
    • Sending funds to the wrong address or network.
    • Leaving no spare XRP for reserves and fees.
    • Depositing into a pool because the APY looks large.
    • Trusting DMs, giveaways or 'support' chats.
    • Assuming a website score replaces your own check.
    Next step →

    Next step: verify things yourself.

  12. 12Verify everything yourself

    About 10 minutes, then ongoing

Goal: Confirm any claim against public ledger data in under a minute.

The public ledger is the source of truth. Explorers show the raw state; our tools do the first pass and explain it in English. Use both.

    Do this

    • Look the issuer up on an explorer such as Bithomp or XRPScan.
    • Confirm the flags: blackhole, freeze, clawback.
    • Compare the issuer address with the project's official channels.
    • Run the token or pool through CampXRP and read 'Why this score?'.
    • If a claim can't be verified on-chain, treat it as marketing.
    Next step →

Next step: use the tools like a power user.

  13. 13Power-user toolkit

    About 10 minutes

Goal: Turn the path into a routine you keep using.

Once the basics are comfortable, the work becomes a habit rather than a lesson. Track what you hold, get told when something changes, and compare assets on data rather than vibes.

    Do this

    • Track a wallet on the Portfolio page.
    • Set alerts for price, volume or risk changes.
    • Compare tokens before you size a position.
    • Watch holder concentration and liquidity quality.
    • Move to a hardware wallet when the amount matters.
    • Keep a dedicated wallet for experiments and a safer wallet for funds you care about.

    Be aware

    • CampXRP tools shorten the first pass. They do not replace judgment.

The finish line

Finish the path and you're ready.

You now have the path. Move slowly. Verify the issuer. Leave spare XRP in the wallet. Use the tools, then check the ledger yourself.
