Wallets
Where your XRP actually lives
A wallet doesn't hold your coins — it holds the keys that prove the coins are yours. Getting this one thing right protects everything else you do.
Custodial vs self-custody
On an exchange, the exchange holds the keys and you hold an IOU. In a self-custody wallet you hold the keys, which means total control and total responsibility.
- Exchange account: easy to start, but you are trusting a company.
- Software wallet: an app on your phone or browser holding your keys.
- Hardware wallet: keys stored on a device that never touches the internet.
The seed phrase rule
Your seed phrase (or family seed on the XRPL) restores your account anywhere. Write it on paper, store it offline, and never type it into a website, a chat, or a support agent's form. Anyone who asks for it is stealing from you.
XRP Ledger specifics
An XRPL account needs a small base reserve of XRP to exist, and each trust line or object you add raises that reserve slightly. That XRP isn't lost — it's locked while the object exists.
