Spotting XRPL Token Scams: A Practical Checklist

Most losses on any ledger come from a handful of repeated patterns. Learn the patterns and you avoid the majority of them.

Fraud on a public ledger is unusually visible. The settings that make a token dangerous are recorded on-chain, and the transactions that inflate its apparent popularity are recorded too. What follows is the sequence of checks worth running before any purchase.

1. Verify the issuer address, not the ticker

Copy the issuer address from the project's own website or verified social account, and compare it character by character against the token you are about to buy. Tickers are free to duplicate; addresses are not.

2. Read the issuer's permissions

If the issuing account can still clawback balances, globally freeze the token or mint unlimited new supply, then holding it means trusting whoever controls that account. For an anonymous project, that trust has no backing at all.

3. Check supply concentration

One wallet holding the majority of supply is the setup for the most common exit: the price is supported until enough buyers arrive, then the position is sold into them. Concentration is measurable before you buy.

4. Compare volume against unique traders

Impressive daily volume produced by a handful of wallets is almost always the same accounts trading with each other to manufacture the appearance of demand. Real interest shows up as many distinct traders, not many trades.

5. Check whether you could exit

Look at the liquidity behind the price. If total AMM liquidity is a few thousand dollars, then a quoted price on a larger position is fiction — you will move the market against yourself on the way out.

6. Slow down

Urgency is a tool. Limited windows, countdowns, and 'you'll miss the entry' pressure exist to prevent the checks above. A genuine opportunity survives twenty minutes of verification; a scam usually does not.
